The Health Risks of Smoking: It's Worth Quitting!

Last updated 5 years ago

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, tobacco use accounts for more deaths each year than HIV, illegal drug use, alcohol use, homicides, and vehicle accidents combined. Despite this startling statistic, over 46 million Americans still smoke. If you’re one of these many Americans, you should strongly consider quitting with the help of a skilled hypnotist. Here’s a closer look at the health risks you may face if you continue to use tobacco:

  • Cancer and Lung Disease
The 70 known carcinogens in cigarettes cause over 200,000 cases of lung cancer every year. Cigarettes also increase the risk of cancers of the esophagus, stomach, sinuses, and other parts of the body. Since there is currently no cure for cancer, it’s best if you quit smoking as soon as possible as a preventative measure. Smoking can also increase the risk of dying from emphysema, chronic bronchitis, or other lung diseases by 12 to 13 times.
  • Heart Disease
Coronary heart disease claims the lives of about 600,000 Americans every year and is the leading cause of death in the United States. Of these 600,000 victims, about 120,000 (20%) are smokers. The harmful chemicals in cigarette smoke cause plaque to build up along the walls of the arteries, which reduces the amount of blood that reaches the heart.
  • Blood Clots
The same plugged up arteries that affect the heart can also cause blood clots throughout the rest of the body. Strokes are particularly harmful occurrences of blood clotting, since they occur in the brain. Unfortunately, smoking increases the risk of stroke by two to four times.
